Rediscovering your WHY as a business owner

Dec 12, 2022

The entrepreneur’s journey never travels in a straight line. Instead, you’ll likely experience many peaks and troughs, where times of great enthusiasm and passion for your business are matched by days that are challenging or just plain exhausting.

That’s why you can’t rely on passion alone to sustain your business journey. Instead, you must tap into a greater purpose; one that will fuel you through both good and tough times.

Reconnecting with your WHY
It’s likely you had a clear sense of purpose when you first went into business for yourself. You had a goal that was bigger than simply earning money. Perhaps you valued the freedom to control your time and your earning potential as a direct-selling entrepreneur. Maybe you were committed to living a healthy lifestyle and wanted to share this incredible life with others.

Over time, however, it’s easy to forget your original sense of purpose as you get caught up in the day-to-day operations of running a business.

The good news is that it’s possible to reconnect with your WHY at any stage in your life as an entrepreneur. The quiet period in early January, or even late December when you’re winding down for the year, can be an ideal time to do it, especially if you’re able to disconnect from your business routine for a few days and enjoy a refreshed state of mind.

Start with your values
Values are a set of qualities of utmost importance to you. When you think, speak and act in alignment with these qualities, your path will always feel like the right one. Which of your personal qualities or traits do you most strongly identify with? Which ones feel most like you?

Start by writing a list of the 10 qualities you value most. Some examples include: independence, security, courage, health, being proactive, creativity, intelligence, adaptability, family, flexibility, adventure, growth, teamwork, trustworthiness, innovation, mindfulness, originality and connection.

It’s important to write down your list so you can refer to it regularly. Remember, these should be the 10 qualities you value above all else.

Next ask yourself: can you see any commonalities among your 10 values words? Try to group them into 3–5 themes. For example, if you have ‘independence’, ‘flexibility’ and ‘being proactive’ as values, they could be grouped together. Another group might include ‘connection’, ‘teamwork’ and ‘trustworthiness’.

Translating values into action
The final step is to make a meaningful connection between your values and your work as an entrepreneur. Again, it’s important to write this down so you can refer back to it regularly.

An example of this might be: Being an entrepreneur allows me to share my values of good health and mindfulness as I form connections with others.

Or: Working for myself allows me to be fully independent, to create a flexible life that’s full of adventure.

Set aside time each week to not just read over but to fully connect with these statements so they fuel your path forward. By doing this, you’ll live in closer alignment with your values and will build a business with a purposeful foundation.
