Three steps to get started working for yourself

Jun 27, 2022

Running a business can be exhilarating, challenging and rewarding. If you’re ready to take the leap from ‘wantrepreneur’ to being your own boss, these three steps will set you up for success.

Step 1: Know why you’re doing it
The most successful business owners have a strong sense of purpose, also known as their ‘why’. Pinpointing this early on in your business-planning journey helps to keep you focused and motivated, even after your initial excitement has worn off.

Writing down your ‘why’ in one or two sentences makes it easy for you to refer to any time you need it. Still figuring out your reason for starting a business? Here are a few examples to get you started. If one of them deeply resonates with you, use it as the basis for your own entrepreneurial sense of purpose.

FREEDOM: “ I love the autonomy that comes with being my own boss and believe in my ability to succeed on my own terms.”

PASSION: “I feel the most motivated when I’m working at something I’m truly passionate about.”

BALANCE: “Work-life balance is important to me. I need to achieve business success without compromising my health or happiness.”

COMPETITION: “I love the challenge of being responsible for my own earning potential and get excited about achieving my business targets each month.”

GIVING BACK: “I want to give back and am committed to building a business that also includes social responsibility.”

Step 2: Make it simple
There are so many decisions that go into starting a business, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Do you have a business plan? How many products will you launch with? What’s your marketing strategy? Who will design your logo?

Fortunately, it doesn’t need to be so complicated. It’s possible – and in many cases, even preferable – to start a business in a lean way. This gives you an opportunity to test your market and your products, to learn and grow as you go.

Another option is to partner with someone who has a proven track record in building businesses, such as a reputable direct selling company. They will have already developed and tested the right product mix, generated customer interest through marketing activities and devised systems and processes that are proven to work. This allows you to concentrate on growing and running your business, knowing you have a strong foundation in place.

Step 3: Get creative with marketing
While you can keep many aspects of your business streamlined and straightforward, marketing is one area where it pays to focus your efforts. There are many ways to market yourself and your business but the object is to understand where your target customers spend their time and to create a presence there.

Social media is one powerful way to market your business and you can find some great tips in this blog post: https://www.jeunesseglobal.com/en-AU/blog/how_to_present_yourself_on_social_media

But there are plenty of other ways to spread the word about what you do, including joining networking groups, attending trade shows and events and expanding your social circle to include new people. The important thing is to pick one or two outlets to focus your efforts and measure the results. This is far more powerful than trying multiple options all at once.
