The Best Style of Leadership For Your Direct Selling Team

Nov 30, 2022

A successful leader knows how to inspire and motivate their team. They know when to offer support and when to push a little harder to bring out the best in people. And they understand that an important part of their role as a leader is to facilitate the success of others.

No matter the size of your direct-selling team, it’s never too early or too late to start working on your leadership skills.

Understanding your personal leadership style
Organisational psychologists have identified almost a dozen different leadership styles (https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/leadership-styles). Understanding your own leadership style is the first step towards becoming a better leader, as it helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses in different situations.

Here are three effective leadership styles in a direct-selling team – plus how to leverage other styles to get the most out of your individual team members.

Leadership style #1: The coach
Just like the coach of a sporting team, this style of leader believes a team is strongest when every member is able to bring their unique skills and abilities to the table. A coach often has a high-performance mentality and focuses on bringing out the best in each person, to drive the team to greater success.

When to use this style: Smaller teams often love having a ‘coach’ as their leader, as this style makes people feel seen and valued. Additionally, sharing and celebrating successes with your team keeps them motivated.

Watch out for: While it’s valuable to recognise the unique qualities in each team member, this style can become difficult to sustain once your team grows. In bigger teams, it may be more efficient for a leader to take this approach with key high-performing individuals.

Leadership style #2: The pacesetter
This leader has high expectations for their team – but also for themself. They don’t just talk the talk, they also walk the walk, setting high standards and leading from the front. A pacesetter brings passion, innovation and a dynamic approach to their work, and they can be incredibly motivating for others with a similar mindset.

When to use this style: The pacesetter thrives in a high-energy environment, and knows how to bring out the best in other skilled and ambitious members of the team.

Watch out for: While many people are motivated by this style of leadership, it can also become overwhelming at times. Make sure you set realistic targets and check in regularly with your team, to prevent them from feeling burnt out.

Leadership style #3: The delegator
Also called ‘laissez-faire’ or ‘hands-off’ leadership, this style of leader leaves each team member to get on with their tasks with minimal interference. If you’re a delegator, you like to set clear expectations for your direct-selling team, so you can focus on closing sales and building your own business further.

When to use this style: Team members who are experienced, motivated and confident will often feel empowered by this style of leadership. Setting expectations and targets keeps them on track.

Watch out for: This approach may not be the most effective with new recruits or inexperienced team members, who may need more hands-on input and clearer direction from their leader.

No matter what your leadership style, it’s important to be able to give feedback to your team in a constructive way.
