How to remain focused during your working day

Jul 13, 2021

Staying focused for an entire working day can sometimes seem like an impossible task. The list of possible distractions – from the pinging of a new email to a phone call from a team member – is endless. If you’re working from home or combining a full-time job with a growing side business, the mental juggle of switching between different tasks can seem even greater.

Focus is not only important for its own sake, it’s also closely tied to productivity. Well-known research from the University of California at Irvine[1] has found that every time we’re interrupted during a task, it can take an average of 23 minutes to return our attention to what we were working on. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this can lead2 to more feelings of stress and frustration while we’re at work.

In spite of all this, it’s still possible to stay focused throughout the day, thanks to a combination of smart strategies, a bit of discipline and plenty of practice. Here’s how to start…

Set a deadline

While interruptions can lead to less focus and more frustration while we work, some researchers believe3 they may also train our brains to become more efficient. It seems that the possibility of an interruption hones our concentration to help us compensate for the times we know we will be interrupted. The unfortunate trade-off is the extra stress we suffer along the way.

Setting a deadline can help stimulate that same focus and concentration, but without the stress of constant interruptions. Try setting a timer at the start of each task and then working with a single focus to complete the task before that buzzer rings.

Break up with your smartphone

Like many business owners, you probably have a conflicted relationship with your phone. While it can help you stay connected to your team and customers, it can also pull your focus from the task at hand – often many times during a day! The key is to become a master of your gadgets, not a slave to them.

One way to do this is to physically remove your smartphone from your workspace. According to a report in Harvard Business Review4, simply having a phone on the desk next to you – even if it’s turned face down or switched off completely – has a significant impact on your performance and ability to complete tasks. The further away the phone is located, the better we perform. So for those times when you really need to focus, try leaving your phone in another room.

Harness your M1ND

Putting these strategies in place and practicing them regularly will go a long way to improving your focus at work. But sometimes, we still need a helping hand – especially as the demands of our working environment are increasing every day. Did you know that in 2011, we took in five times the amount of information 5each day compared to 1986? And with emails, text messages, Zoom calls, social media alerts and more, it's only getting quicker!

We formulated M1ND6 precisely for this reason – because we want to help keep you on top of your game each day. This cutting-edge product was developed by Dr Vincent Giampapa, a board-certified physician, Nobel Prize nominee and member of the Jeunesse Scientific Advisory Board, and is backed by years of research.

M1ND is formulated with high-quality ingredients including the amino acid L-Theanine, plus CERA-Q, a powerful protein blend that's exclusive to Jeunesse. M1ND gives you an extra advantage to improve memory, fight mental distractions and stay focused throughout your working day.
